Trust and empathy are a huge part of any relationship. When you really look at your team, it is a culmination of dozens of relationships. Therefore, developing trust and empathy within your team is necessary.

Hero, Heartache and Highlight is a team building activity I learned from my brother-in-law, Andy. His high school basketball team did this during their pre season. The sharing was said to be emotional, but very rewarding and revealing. Even though girls generally tend to be more forthcoming with their feelings and emotions, this is an excellent team activity to establish a respecting and trusting culture.

Let me know how it goes with your team! Get the free printable of the activity to use with your team below! XO, Coach D.

HERO HEARTBREAK HIGHLIGHT TEAM BUILDING ACTIVITY BY SHE PLAYSHero, Heartache, Highlight:

Hero: Who is your hero and why do you admire him or her?

Heartache: A moment from your life that has caused pain, sadness, and/or unease.

Highlight: Share one highlight from your life. One thing you did, one thing that happened to you, one thing you’re really proud of.

Suggestions for sharing:

  • Coach, make sure you share too! If you take it seriously, your girls will follow suit.
  • Remind your team that you are sharing in a safe place. That what is said is for the team only.
  • If you have a large team (track, swimming, etc.) maybe split into segments or have only a few share at a time.
  • Give time for your team to think on their answers, so they are honest and also succinct.
  • Andy’s basketball team passed around a basketball. Whoever had the ball shared and then passed it off to another teammate or coach when done.
